A thorough understanding of the biomechanics of the force systems used in orthodontic treatment is essential. This enables clinicians to make appropriate modifications that capitalize on the advantages of these mechanics while minimizing their undesirable effects on treatment.
What contributed most to this treatment being successful?
In this case, en-masse distalization was performed in both arches. Because the point of force application was positioned occlusal to the center of resistance of the maxillary and mandibular dentitions, the maxillary arch tended to rotate clockwise, whereas the mandibular arch rotated counterclockwise. Consequently, the incisors in both arches showed a tendency toward extrusion. This biomechanical effect was intentionally utilized to increase maxillary incisor display during smiling. To offset the corresponding vertical changes in the mandibular arch, additional intrusion of the lower incisors was incorporated, thereby preventing premature anterior contacts during distalization.
